Hong Kong Visa & Immigration Services

The Immigration Department runs seven talent admission schemes, each with its own eligibility test. Most rejections come down to positioning and documentation rather than the underlying profile. We assess which scheme fits, then build the application to that scheme's criteria.

The seven talent admission schemes

The Immigration Department processes seven main schemes. The Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS) targets high earners and graduates of globally ranked universities. The General Employment Policy (GEP) covers professionals with a confirmed offer and entrepreneurs. The Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals (ASMTP) covers mainland professionals with specialist skills, and Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG) covers graduates of Hong Kong institutions.

The Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS) is points-based and achievement-based and does not require a job offer. The Technology Talent Admission Scheme (TechTAS) fast-tracks R&D positions at companies holding approved quotas. The Admission Scheme for Second-Generation Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents (ASSG) covers applicants aged 18 to 40 born outside the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan whose parent holds a Hong Kong permanent identity card.

Choosing between them is the substantive decision. A profile that is marginal under one scheme is often comfortable under another.

Entry, visa-free access and status

Around 170 nationalities can enter Hong Kong visa-free for periods ranging from 7 to 180 days. Taiwanese nationals have 30 days, APEC Business Travel Card holders 60 days, Indian nationals must complete pre-arrival registration, and Chinese nationals require a Two-way Permit.

A passport with sufficient validity and blank pages is a baseline requirement for any application. Short-term visitors generally cannot work or study, and cannot switch immigration status after arrival without a specific permit or scheme, which is why the scheme decision is made before travel, not after.

What residence in Hong Kong offers

Direct access to a major financial hub connected to the mainland and Macao, no foreign exchange controls, low personal tax rates, and strong infrastructure, healthcare and schooling. Spouse dependants are granted unrestricted work rights without a separate work visa. Dependant approvals under IANG rose from 4,702 in 2023 to 6,600 in 2024.

After seven years of continuous ordinary residence, an applicant can apply for permanent residency and the right of abode. Continuous residence is a technical test, and absences matter, so we track the period and advise on absence management for clients working across the region.

For entrepreneurs and investors, the visa and the company are one project. We coordinate incorporation, banking, accounting, payroll and MPF registration alongside the application, since genuine business activity is what supports the first renewal.

Contact our immigration specialists to arrange an initial consultation and the assessment of your eligibility for all available Hong Kong visa schemes. Three Main Factors in Visa Application:

Each application needs a Hong Kong company as sponsor of the visa application.

The Immigration Department will consider what benefits the sponsoring company brings to the Hong Kong economy in terms of:

Employment of local staff and introduction of skills,

How important the proposed applicant is to the business.

Qualifications and experience (including skills related to the parent company)

Whether the position can be reasonably filled by a local person instead of a foreigner.

Possesses particular knowledge, skill and experience in their field.

Has specialised knowledge necessary for the company’s growth in Hong Kong (and thereby enhances the opportunity to create more local jobs).

Has skills and knowledge which can be transferred to local employees.

FAQs

Visa services: questions we are asked most

Which Hong Kong visa scheme is best for skilled professionals?+

The Top Talent Pass Scheme is usually fastest for high earners and graduates of eligible universities. Category A requires assessable income of HK$2.5 million or more with no job offer needed; Category B requires an eligible degree and three years of work experience. The General Employment Policy suits professionals with a confirmed offer, and QMAS suits applicants without pre-arranged employment through points-based assessment.

How long does Hong Kong visa processing take?+

Indicatively: Top Talent Pass 4 to 6 weeks, employment visas under GEP 6 to 8 weeks, and QMAS up to 12 months because of its periodic selection exercises. Processing guidelines move with policy, so official Immigration Department announcements govern.

Why are visa applications refused?+

Most commonly: income documentation that does not support the claimed category, degrees from institutions outside the recognised list, thin business plans on entrepreneur and investment applications, and missing tax returns, profit statements or relationship documents. Careful preparation is the main lever an applicant controls.

Can Primasia handle company setup alongside a business visa?+

Yes. We coordinate incorporation, business registration, banking, accounting, payroll and company secretarial support with the visa application, so the entity is operating properly and can evidence genuine business activity at renewal.

How do I become a Hong Kong permanent resident?+

After seven years of continuous ordinary residence you can apply for permanent residency and the right of abode. Continuous residence is a technical test and absences matter, so we track the qualifying period and advise on absence management for clients working across the region.
